SUP Waste

RESIDUS SUB · A Film Collection to Change Our Perspective

We live surrounded by waste. Some of it we see; some disappears from sight as soon as we throw it away. But none of it truly disappears. Every piece of waste leaves a footprint. Behind every package, object or product lie raw materials, energy, water and natural resources that often go unnoticed. And behind every piece of waste, there is also a consumption choice.

SUP Waste invites us to look beyond the bin and reflect on the impact of our everyday habits. The collection explores the environmental challenges associated with waste generation and the consequences of a linear economic model based on extracting resources, producing, consuming and discarding. It also highlights the opportunities offered by waste prevention, reuse, repair and the circular economy as pathways towards a more sustainable society.

At SUNCINE, we have created a collection of films dedicated to waste, bringing this reality closer to audiences through a wide range of perspectives, places and stories. Documentaries and narratives that reveal the consequences of our current production and consumption model, while also showcasing innovative initiatives, resilient communities and people working to transform it.

The collection is sponsored by the Agència de Residus de Catalunya (Waste Agency of Catalonia) and Ecoembes, with the aim of raising public awareness of the need to reduce waste generation and make more efficient use of resources. Beyond recycling, the films highlight key actions such as avoiding single-use products, extending the lifespan of objects, encouraging repair, sharing resources, preventing food waste and embracing more responsible consumption choices.

Plastics, marine litter, food waste, reuse, recycling, ecodesign, the circular economy, pollution and new production models all form part of a cinematic narrative that seeks not only to expose a problem but also to inspire solutions. The stories in this collection remind us that sustainability depends not only on how we manage waste, but, above all, on the decisions we make before that waste is even generated.

Through cinema, we aim to encourage critical reflection on the environmental, social and economic impacts of our consumption systems, while fostering a culture rooted in shared responsibility, sufficiency, material circularity and respect for the planet's limits.

Because the best waste is the waste we never generate.

Changing what happens afterwards begins by rethinking what we do beforehand: what we buy, what we consume, what we keep and what we choose to put back into circulation.
